The Springfield X-treme Duty Service is a semi-automatic medium-frame pistol chambered in .45 ACP. The XD .45 ACP Service model is one of 19 XD .45 ACP polymer framed variations offered by Springfield. The XD series is manufactured by HS Produkt in Karlovac, Croatia, and was modeled after its HS2000, a standard issue Croatian military and police service pistol introduced in the 1990s. However, Springfield sells the XD series domestically and has expanded the XD line to include a variety of calibers and sizes. And some more than others, the XD .45 ACP has 19 different models that vary by size and features. The Service is similar in size to the XD .45 ACP with a 4″ barrel, but what makes it different is that it has a thumb safety.
Features include a grip safety, meaning the gun can only be fired when the hand firmly depresses the safety located at the rear of the handle. The XD .45 series also includes a patented Ultra Safety Assurance trigger system, which guards against accidental discharge. The USA only allows the gun to be fired when direct rearward pressure is applied to the trigger, eliminating the possibility of accidental discharge if the gun is dropped or bumped. The XD has a striker status indicator that protrudes from the rear of the steel slide when the striker mechanism is cocked. In addition, it has a loaded chamber indicator, which is a thin piece of metal that pops up when a round is in the chamber.
