AR 15
Originally the AR-15 was a select-fire
rifle designed by
Armalite, which is where the abbreviation derives from, but today the term is commonly used to refer to the design rather than a specific rifle. Before shutting down operations due to struggling finances, Armalite sold the design to
Colt in 1959 for manufacturing. Colt quickly marketed it to the U.S. Navy, Air Force, Army, and Marine
Corps and it was soon adopted by the military under the designation
M16. And in 1963, Colt began selling the rifle commercially.
The AR 15 design is lightweight (5.5 to 8.5 pounds), chambered in 5.56mm, and gas-operated. It is comprised extensively of aluminum alloys and synthetic materials.
There are many notable features on the weapon. These include: adjustable front and rear sights, straight-line synthetic stock design, and aluminum and corrosion-resistant receiver.
