Heckler & Koch
German manufacturer Heckler and Koch is synonymous with innovation. The company was among the first to use polymer in
gun designs, and pioneered the use of integral rails on
handguns to mount flash lights. Polygonal rifling, known to increase accuracy and muzzle velocity, was also introduced by HK. Such developments have made HK a trusted maker of small arms. Some of the company's signature
rifles and
pistols include the
SA80 assault rifle, the
MP5 submachine gun, and the
USP series of handguns.
HK has been involved with numerous law enforcement agencies and militaries since being founded in 1949. The company made rifles for the British Army in the '90s, while the Norwegen Army recently adopted the
HK416 as its standard issue rifle. It's also the alleged rifle used to kill known terrorists and Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. HK received a large handgun contract from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in 2004, believed to be worth as much as $26 million. It ranks as the single largest handgun contract in American law enforcement history.
In the United States, HK sells its pistols to both the civilian and law enforcement markets.
