Revolver

A revolver is a firearm that features revolving chambers that lets the shooter fire multiple shots without having to reload. The cylinder turns to align the next chamber as the user cocks the hammer. Most revolvers hold five or six rounds. A revolver is typically a handgun, but some shotguns, rifles and grenade launchers can be found borrowing from its design. The modern revolver was invented by Samuel Colt, of Colt firearms.

The hammer-cocking action happens either directly or indirectly. In a single-action revolver, the shooter pulls back on the hammer to rotate the cylinder and align the next shot. A quick pull on the trigger will then fire a projectile. A double-action revolver requires a longer pull on the trigger. The first pull will rotate the cylinder, the second will fire the shot. Single-action is considered faster but generally less accurate. The majority of contemporary revolvers are 'traditional double-action', meaning they can be fired either way.

Semi-automatic pistols have largely replaced revolvers for police officers and military personnel due to greater ammunition capacities and shorter reload times. Revolvers remain popular for secondary weapons for off-duty law enforcement officers and security guards.
