It's often been said that there’s a time and a place for everything.
So, for example, when eleven survivors and family members of victims of the January 2011 shooting in Tucson, AZ, that almost fatally wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), gathered in the nation’s capital at a hearing to support legislation (Fix Gun Checks Act) that would address alleged deficiencies in the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System, was this the appropriate time and the place to question a federal agent on Operation: Fast and Furious?
Well, Sen. Chuck Grassley believed it was and, to the chagrin of some of those in attendance, he proceeded to grill FBI official David Cuthbertson about his knowledge of the failed gun-walking operation that allowed upwards of 2,000 guns to cross the U.S.-Mexico border undeterred (see video).
Now Sen. Grassley is receiving a fair deal of criticism for his decision to press agent Cuthbertson on Fast and Furious at the hearing for the Fix Gun Checks Act, a bill sponsored by Charles Schumer (D-NY) and designed to ensure that “all individuals who should be prohibited from buying a firearm are listed in the national instant criminal background check system and require a background check for every firearm sale.”
In a letter Retired Colonel Bill Badger, Nancy Bowman, Carol Dorushka, Kenneth Dorushka, Randy Gardner, John Maisch, Patricia Maisch, Angela Robbinson, Faith Salzgeber, Foger Salzgeber and Mavy Stoddard expressed their grievances with Sen. Grassley’s conduct.
The leader reads, “We write to express our profound disappointment with your dismissive and political response to Patricia’s testimony, your obvious disregard for gun violence survivors in the room, and your apparent ignorance of the deadly serious issue we came to discuss with you.”
It continues, “Senator, we think it was inappropriate of you to immediately turn yesterday’s hearing into a reason to ask questions about an unrelated inquiry on the controversy known as ‘Fast & Furious.’ We were no there to discus Fast & Furious. The other witnesses were not there to discuss Fast and Furious. Our experiences have nothing to do with Fast and Furious. But you did not care.”
They also lampooned Sen. Grassley for using his Blackberry during the proceedings, “Senator, were you listening when Patricia told you about Dorthy Morris, Dorwan Stoddard…? Nothing you had to say indicated you were. The fact that you were focused on your Blackberry during much of Patricia’s testimony suggests you weren’t.”
A spokeswoman for Sen. Grassley responded to the letter, she told TPM.com, “that he heard the concerns of the victims from Ms. Masich’s testimony and he understands the impact of gun violence on all victims.”
And in a written statement to TPM.com, Grassley defended his inquiry by saying that he “gave his word” to the family of slain Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry that he “would take every opportunity to question officials who might have information about the program, and to ensure that there are not more victims of gun violence as a result of the government’s flawed policies.”
It should be noted that Grassley did question the merits of the Fix Gun Checks Act. Not all his questions were about Fast and Furious. He brought up several of the Constitutional concerns the Act raises and at one point asked, “Isn’t it possible that this bill will become a new deterrent for those who need mental health counseling because they’re afraid to seek it for fear of losing their Second Amendment rights?”
So what’s your take? Did Sen. Grassley misuse his authority? Should he have brought up Operation Fast and Furious at the hearing for the Fix Gun Checks Act? Was his line of questioning, as described in the letter, “a tactic of callous, cold, and calculated distraction”?
He doesn't want to support the FGCA, so he took his time to discuss something else.
There is no good solution to this problem... how do we prohibit the one crazy person from buying a gun without infringing on everyone else's rights? Do we make the process harder for the 9,999 people who purchase a gun everyday because there is 1 person who probably shouldn't be allowed to own a gun? You can't legislate morality and you can't stop crazy.
Fast and Furious does need to be brought up in this hearing because Sen Grassley needs to know the motives behind this Bill and if this Bill is being used to side step Fast and Furious. I know if I was called to a hearing on a Gun bill that was up for a hearing during a major scandal involving government sanctioned illegal Gun sales, I'd want to know all details.

Personally I believe the questions asked by Senator Grassley were much more important to the USA than the Agenda of Charles Schumer of N.Y.!!
Passing more gunlaws against the Law abiding Citizens of the USA is a waste of taxpayers Money, The United States of America's Money...And has Many times over been Proven Worthless!..

The perp (whose name will not be used) in Tuscon would have obtained a firearm one way or another. An ad on Craigslist would have allowed him to make a cash purchase from anyone who needed the money.
The REAL issue is the lack of enough honest, hard working, law abiding citizens being free to carry either concealed (or my preference, open) carry of handguns.
The need to have concealed carry was more than evident in the Waco Luby's massacre in 1991. Many could have been saved if the killer had been stopped sooner. The same could be said for the Virginia Tech killings in 2007. There is NO reason why more than 2-3 people should have died from any of these 3 killers (and 1 life lost is too many),
Concealed carry is the answer - the police are not and can not be there to protect and serve. They can only be there to pick up the pieces and investigate after the fact. We are the only ones that we can trust for our safety and the safety of out families and neighbors.

I agree with most of what you said, but not for the reasons you said. While I agree that more people should CC, AZ gun laws make every allowance for people (but not ninjas) to CC. It is not the ability to CC, but the will to act.
Our society is training people to be cowards. From schools with zero tolerance (if there is a fight both parties get suspended regardless of evidence) policies, to domestic violence police policy (if they get called someone has to go to jail regardless of evidence), body scanner submission and places that have a duty to retreat law. It is the pussification of American Citizens that is making it more safe for criminal activity.
On top of all that is the growing inability to decipher and understand statistical manipulation.
For instance, in the Gifford shooting only 33% of the victims were killed, clearly handguns are ineffectual and nearly non lethal. Furthermore is it estimated that 30rds were fired that day. That means bullets are only 20% effective. In comparison Jack the Ripper is believed to have murdered 11 women with the same blade. It is an easy argument to make that blades are infinitely more deadly than hand guns.

Yeah , well , I about had it up and " Giffords shooting " in AZ. .Yes , she's alive and she doing better , but , she wasn't the only one that got shot . Do they , the media , talk to any body that was there ? No . And , are the ones that got shot , and lived , got doctors , medicines , and all that , that WE , the people gave and still are , ? No . Should have Grassley brought up " F & F " ? Maybe . What will Schumers bill do anyways ? And , I thought there was already a bill with that on the books ? Brady Bill if I recall . Why don't the government and try the laws that are already on the books , before we come up with another law ? I'm sorry that Gabby got shot , but , don't and try to forgot that she wasn't the only one that got shot . And , it's been two years now , and why haven't her seat been filled yet ? Wheres that ? She can't do that job , therefore , get someone who can .

Considering Fast and Furious may have been a false flag operation to make hay for closing some of the gunshow loopholes in the gun control laws, this was entirely appropriate. If The FBI agent was a proponent/ witness for establishing this law, then his viability as a witness needs dealt with.........
Google straw purchases and news for the last several years, learn what MSM is not talking about. Especially in border states..........

From a resident of Tucson at the time, and saved from being at the scene with my 2 year old son simply because there are 2 Whole Foods markets in the city, I have this to say.
Fast and Furious needs to be questioned at every turn, and when ever possible.
The shooter got his gun because CURRENT LAWS are NOT ENFORCED! The PCSO knew about this man. Pima County Community College campus police knew about him, and the college administration had him expelled and barred from campus for fear of his mental instability. PCSO had many LE contacts with the shooter for drug use/possesion, but the Pima County DA chose not to follow through with court proceedings. To the best of my knowledge, TPD did not release any of their information on contacts with the shooter, but if there were, no follow up was made.
Yet no one followed up on anything. Not the Sheriff's Office, not PCC, not even his parents, who seemed to be okay with a skull topped shrine/alter in their backyard.
So there was a terrible crime committed, and the Lefties got to slander their hated enemies. Please keep in mind that all of the following media circus of blame and vicious ridicule proved to be totally baseless.
What happened on Jan 8, 2011 was horrible, but very preventable under the existing laws on the books.
I would never, EVER! trust Chuck Schumer to pen a gun law for any purpose other than to increase state control over who can have a gun, when, and where. It will not make the citizens of the US any safer, only less free.
In what is probably the height of irony, one of the victims of the crime threatened to kill one of the leaders of the local TEA Party at a public forum, and was promptly arrested.
