"Oh, and you can put an after-market tritium front sight on them, unlike the 642/442 models, which have a solid ramp sight. I did this a while ago, and have been very happy with the swap.

"Yeah, it did. I'm not bothered by that - my 642 had one, and in several years of regular use I never had a problem with it. Furthermore, a quick check online will point you to a tutorial on how to completely remove the lock in about 5 minutes without in any way compromising the function of the gun.
BTW, Smith now offers most of their models without the lock, if you want. Me, I just look for the best price. "
