Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and MidwayUSA's Initiative takes aim at keeping Hunters SAFE

Fueled by a magnanimous contribution from MidwayUSA’s Larry and Brenda Potterfield, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation announced recently that they plan to sponsor the SAFE (Shooting Access For Everyone) Challenge in 2011—a fresh initiative that aims to introduce a new generation of gun enthusiasts, novice hunters and budding youth shooters to safe and effective shooting, hunting and modern conservation.

The Potterfields, who you may already be familiar with as the proprietors of MidwayUSA, the catalog and blossoming Internet retail warehouse that, true to its tagline, offers gun owners “Just About Everything”, counted out close to half a million dollars to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation in support of this promising educational opportunity.

SAFE, in keeping with both organizations’ reputations as facilitators of hunter’s roles in conservation, will prime curious shooters to safe, responsible, enjoyable firearm use, as well as educate newcomers about the symbiotic relationship between hunters and the natural world.

Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation president David Allen said of his ambitions for SAFE, “Our goal is to build public understanding and appreciation of guns, shooting and hunting, and ultimately to recruit and welcome 50,000 newcomers into the sporting community.”

He also lauded the efforts of the Potterfields, stating, “With leaders like the Potterfields and MidwayUSA, and their partnership with many dedicated volunteer organizations like ours, I see a bright future for conservation and our hunting heritage.”

MidwayUSA founder Larry Potterfield echoed this, citing the importance of communication between the generations to the future of North American sportsmanship: “Dad taught me to hunt and fish and I’ve had a lifelong passion for the outdoors since.  Brenda and I are excited to partner with RMEF to help train our next generation of hunters and shooters on safe shooting.”
