ATF Firearms Commerce Report Published for First Time in Eight Years

Here is a press from the ATF concerning its updated Firearms Commerce report released last week:

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) today [12/16/11] released its updated report, Firearms Commerce in the United States 2011, which contains information about domestic firearms manufacturing, as well as the importation and exportation of firearms.

The report contains the most up-to-date information available about the firearms industry and ATF’s regulatory activities.

The four-part report includes information on firearms entering commerce; ATF regulatory initiatives and programs; law enforcement and regulatory missions; and statistical data.

More than eight years has elapsed since the report was last published.

“The information in this report will educate the public about the trade, regulatory and enforcement initiatives pertaining to the firearms industry,” said Arthur Herbert, assistant director, Office of Enforcement Programs and Services.

ATF continuously develops and strengthens its collaborative efforts with members of the firearms industry and consumers through education and outreach to prevent the diversion of firearms through illegal markets. This report provides one-stop shopping for those having an interest in the data.

In case you’re wondering, the report makes no mention of the flawed gunwalking program known as Operation Fast and Furious.  However, it does tout the ATF’s ability to track gun smugglers and illegal arms dealers by using “proprietary data” also known as information gathered through regulatory measures, e.g. “Multiple Sales” tracking.

The paragraph reads:

ATF intelligence research specialists combine ATF proprietary data (e.g., Multiple Sales and FFL Out of Business Records) and all source information to identify firearms traffickers, illegal firearms trafficking corridors, and armed violators. ATF intelligence products provide special agents with comprehensive information to detect, investigate, apprehend, and recommend for prosecution those individuals or groups of persons who unlawfully transfer or possess firearms.

Overall though, most of the information contained in the report is straight data regarding the number of firearms manufactured, imported and exported over the years.
