Athletes Compete for Spot in the Olympic Games in 2012 for 10m Air Gun

This coming weekend more than 180 athletes will meet at Camp Perry in Port Clinton, Ohio, for the second round of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for air gun. Six athletes will be chosen based on scores from this weekend and their scores from the first round of trials that were held in December 2011. These six team members will include two each from the Men’s 10m Air Rifle, Women’s 10m Air Rifle and Men’s 10m Air Pistol divisions.

Air gun is a precision sport in which one course of fire consists of male competitors shooting 60 shots and female competitors shooting 40 shots at electronic targets that are placed 10m down range. Each shot is worth 10 points, making the maximum number of points possible 600 or 400 respectively. Male competitors receive one hour and 45 minutes to make their 60 shots while female competitors are given one hour and 15 minutes to make their 40 shots. This course of fire shot is four times during the course of the trials.

An aggregate match score will be used to determine the top eight competitors who will then move to the finals. For the finals course of fire, competitors will shoot 10 shots on the Chief Range Officer’s command. Two final rounds, combined with the final scores from the four courses of fire in the main event, will determine the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team.
