Navy Prepared to Confront Iran

Last month, US Navy Forces in Bahrain are prepared to confront hostile aggression from Iranian forces, officials said.
Iranian officials have threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz should the country’s oil exports be blocked. Currently, Iran and Oman share control of the waterway, through which a fifth of the world’ oil is exported. However, the Strait of Hormuz is considered an international strait, which guarantees free transit passage under international law.
Early in January Gen. Ataollah Salehi, Iran’s army chief, warned an American warship not to return to the strait, but aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln entered the Gulf without incident on Jan. 22. While speaking with CBS “Face the Nation” in January, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey stated that while Iranian forces could shut down the strait for some time, “We could defeat that”.
Vice Adm. Mark Fox told reporters that Iran’s military could strike a blow against American forces in the Gulf, but added that he had reminded officers under his command that they “have a right and an obligation of self defense”.
