Minnesota Governor Vetoes Castle Doctrine Bill

On Monday, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton vetoed a Castle Doctrine bill, citing opposition from law enforcement groups as the reason for his decision.
While Minnesota already has Castle Doctrine, the new bill would expand the definition of dwelling beyond just a home to include a hotel room, tent, car or boat. The bill would have also removed the obligation for a person to safely retreat, if the option were available. Current Minnesota laws allow use of deadly force if it is what a reasonable person would do and if there is no way to safely retreat.
The Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association, Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association and the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association all expressed their opposition to the bill, worrying that it would make it legal for homeowners to shoot police officers entering their property.
