The New Zealand Army is introducing the Heckler & Koch Grenade Machine Gun (GMG) as one of their Land Combat Weapons.
Fired from the ground or vehicle mounts, the GMG is a 40mm Automatic Grenade Launcher that uses a variety of high explosive and training ammunition. The New Zealand Army’s GMGs will be equipped with the BAE Heavy Weapon Thermal Sights as well as day sights. The full introduction of the GMG is expected to be complete in early 2013. In order to accommodate the transition the New Zealand Army has also purchased a combination weapon mount that will fit both the Grenade and Heavy Machine Guns.
A dedicated tactical simulation training system will be acquired and training on use of the GMG will be conducted at a unit level, specialist command training will be conducted at the New Zealand Army Combat School on top of existing courses.
