Washington State Adopts a "Blue Alert Bill" for when Officers are Injured or Killed in the Line of Duty

On Thursday, March 15, 2012 Washington State Gov. Christine Gregiore signed a bill to help alert the public after a law enforcement officer is injured or killed in the line of duty.

The “Blue Alert Bill”, House Bill 1820, was first considered in 2009 after the death of Seattle police officer Timothy Brenton. The bill passed the house unanimously on Feb. 29, six days after Washington State Patrol trooper Tony Radulescu was killed in the line of duty.

Similar to the Amber Alert, after a law enforcement officer is injured or killed in Washington State, radio, TV and freeway billboards would be used to provide the public with information.

The sponsor of the bill, Rep. Mike Hope, R-Lake Stevens is a Seattle police veteran and believe the $100,000 price tag is worth it.

“It’s not only my responsibility as a police officer but it’s also my duty as a state legislator to protect the public,” Hope said. “This bill will provide law enforcement the necessary additional tools to apprehend our most dangerous criminals.”
