The SAAMI Removes Association with UN International Small Arms Control Standards Project

Recently the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute (SAAMI) has withdrawn any reference of the Institute’s association from the United Nations agency project to create “International Small Arms Control Standards (ISACS).”

SAAMI is a registered United Nations non-governmental organization (NGO) with roster status that wanted to be involved in assisting ISACS with the project’s original goal “To develop internationally accepted and validated standards that provide clear and comprehensive guidance to practitioners and policy-makers on small arms and light weapons control.” SAAMI is now accusing the process of being tainted and has withdrawn its association with the project in hopes of retaining the Institute’s reputation of professionalism and credibility.

“SAAMI joined the ISACS project with the expectation of finding or ensuring therein a standard-setting process that utilized intellectually rigorous, fact-based protocols and that welcomed all points of view for the purpose fo defining mutually agreeable and, in fact, unassailable conclusions. What SAAMI found instead in the ISACS process was a methodology that ignored contract opinions and appeared intentionally to use procedural devices to quell debate.”
