Pro-Gun Mourdock Beats Out Gun Control Incumbent Lugar in Senate Race

Guns rights supporter Richard Mourdock defeated gun control proponent Dick Lugar for the Indiana Senator Republican primary.

Dick Lugar, the dethroned incumbent, was previously the Senate’s most senior Republican. He was sworn in on January of 1977, and he’s been unbeatable ever since. During his time in office Lugar voted to support longer wait times on guns and a ban on many semi-automatic weapons, policies that earned him an “F” grade from the Gun Owners of America (GOA). Evidently, Indiana voters got tired of voting for a candidate who was, well, kinda Republican.

Lugar’s replacement is Richard Mourdock, a former Treasurer of State of Indiana and a much more avid gun rights supporter. Mourdock had the full support of the GOA throughout his candidacy and praised the group, “I can’t thank Gun Owners of America enough for their early support of my campaign.”

Of course, the fight’s not over quite yet. Mourdock will go up against Democratic hopeful Joe Donnelly in November. If Mourdock makes his way to the Senate floor, we can hope that he will undo much of Lugar’s gun control policies.
