Chicago Shooting Spree: 25 Shot in 24 Hours

Chicago police had a rough night this Memorial Day weekend between Saturday and Sunday. It’s a truly staggering statistic: 25 people were shot across several incidents. With a shooting spree this massive it’s hard to figure out where to begin, so we’ll just have to dive right in.

An argument broke out in a Marquette Park neighborhood around 4:15. One individual drew a gun and fired, missing the intended target and hitting a 6-year-old girl instead. The young girl was playing in front of her house. Luckily (if you could call it that), she was only shot in the arm. She is in good condition at Holy Cross Hospital.

Two hours later, a pair of men were shot in what police believe was a retaliation. Both of the men drove themselves to the hospital, where they received treatment.

Two men in a car that appeared to have hit something — the front of the car was damaged and an airbag was deployed — were also shot. One was shot in the leg, while the other was shot in the back and shoulder. The man with the wounds to his back was in critical condition.

A 29-year-old woman was shot in the arm around 7:30 pm. She was unable to spot her shooter.

Five people were shot within 20 minutes of each other in two separate attacks between 2:10 and 2:30 am.

Elsewhere, a party bus unloaded a group of people into a club, and a few moments later shots were fired. Three men were shot in this incident, one of whom, a 19-year-old later died at a hospital.

Wow, what a mouthful. Police are investigating each of the instances, and in many cases the police suspect that they may be related. At more than one person shot per hour in a one-day period, is this all just a terrible coincidence or are they putting something murderous in the water over in Chicago?
