Glock Gives Us 10 Trusty Tips for National Safety Month

Glock is promoting National Safety Month and wants to remind you of a few helpful safety tips that can ensure that you are a responsible firearm owner. Yeah, we know what you’re thinking: “I don’t need no stinkin’ safety lesson! I learned how to handle my firearms years ago and I could be the poster boy (or gal) for gun safety!”

Well, that may be true, but brushing up on gun safety can’t hurt, can it? Each one of these tips is just as important as the last. Think of them as the 10 Commandments of gun ownership!

  1. Train with all of your guns. Each gun is a little bit different, so it’s important that you know what to expect whenever you pick up one of your firearms.
  2. Handle every firearm as if it’s loaded. Of course!
  3. Always point the muzzle in a safe direction that is away from yourself and others. Pointing a gun at anybody, even in jest, is just asking for a jail sentence.
  4. Keep your finger off the guard until you’re ready to fire. Hair triggers are no joke.
  5. Be certain of your target and the surrounding area before shooting. That includes thinking about what’s behind your target.
  6. Know your gun’s safety features. Don’t just assume that you know how the safety features work. Be 100 percent certain.
  7. Store your gun properly. Gun case: good. Inside the refrigerator: bad.
  8. Educate loved ones on gun safety. We just had Take Your Daughter to the Range Day a few weeks ago. It’s never too early to introduce kids to gun safety. And even if you wife hates your guns, it’s important that she knows how they work.
  9. Ensure all users are properly trained. Having a household that includes one gun expert and three gun novices basically means that you’re three times as likely to experience a gun-related accident.
  10. Properly maintain your gun. Cars and guns are about the only devices out there that regularly have to endure explosions. The last thing you want is your handheld explosion device to go on the fritz.
