Illinois Shooters Raise $45k for Sick Kids at St. Jude Hospital
Kindhearted gun enthusiasts and members of the Illinois Shady Creek Shootist teamed up to raise over $45,000 for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Illinois may be the only state in the US that doesn’t allow people to carry concealed weapons, but that doesn’t mean that Illinoisan gun lovers are twiddling their thumbs and bemoaning their bad luck. They’re out raising money for medical research, and they’re using guns to help promote the cause.
The Cowboy Charity Shoot features cowboy-themed shooting competitions in order to raise money for the St. Jude Hospital. They made their first run in 2003 and sent the hospital a check for $6,500. They’ve improved on that number nearly every single year since then, with the 2012 charity amassing a record-setting $45,750. Altogether, they’ve collected $300,000 in donations.
The charity is fully non-profit. Dan “Dapper Dan” Porter, an event organizer, explained to Review Atlas, “The only expenses we take out are direct costs of things like the portable toilets. We take no administrative costs out.” They’ve got a few other tricks up their sleeves to maximize donation potential. They hold live and silent auctions, and they also accept donations. One family pledged to pay $2 for every veteran in attendance. All of this is in addition to the $20 entry fee for each visitor.
What a great way to celebrate gun pride in the state of Illinois. Rather than sulking about concealed carry laws, these fine folks are showing the rest of the state that most gun owners really are decent human beings.
