DoubleTap Finds New Manufacturing Partner, Production Ensues (Soon?)

After months of drama, today, DoubleTap Firearms LLC, maker of the DoubleTap Tactical Pocket Pistol, announced that it’s getting back on track to producing that slick little pocket gun, and ultimately shipped to a store near you.

Since DoubleTap terminated its relationship with Hiezer Defense last month citing “production issues,” the company said in a press release that it has decided to go with Florida-based Azimuth Technology, LLC to manufacture its unique product.

If you’re unfamiliar with the DoubleTap, it’s a ultra-compact, no-snag, concealed carry pistol available in either .45 or 9mm, and built on your choice of a titanium or aluminum frame. Essentially it’s a new take on the derringer.

“When we announced that DoubleTap was looking for a new manufacturing partner [October 2012], we were pleasantly surprised by the positive response from the firearms manufacturers and other precision manufacturing companies,” Ray Kohout, inventor and founder of DoubleTap Defense said. “It became very clear that Azimuth Technology was the perfect fit in corporate philosophy, facility capability and plain, old-fashioned, roll-up-your-sleeves determination to bring this product to market in a timely fashion.”

And hopefully Azimuth is up to the job. Since the DoubleTap pistol was revealed in 2011, DoubleTap Firearms LLC has been teasing the public with sexed up, hi-def images of the gun online in an attempt to spark interest to the unique design — and it worked. Anyone who has attended a major show like SHOT Show or the NRA convention could tell you that the DoubleTap booth was swamped with people trying to get a closer look.

“Since we introduced the DoubleTap Tactical Pocket Pistol in November of last year, we have been overwhelmed by the industry reception,” Kohout said in October. “The popularity confirmed by literally tens of thousands of orders placed by consumers to their dealers, through our distributor partners.”

In addition to firearms, Azimuth produces products for various industries including defense, aerospace, oil/gas and many others. The company said in the press release that it has more than 60 of the newest CNC precision machines capable of handling lot sizes from a mere 100 pieces to 1 million.

Otherwise, information — like a timeframe or specific dates — is scarce, but Laura Burgess, DoubleTap’s public relations contact, said the two companies are currently finalizing details.
