When it comes to self-defense, guns are the ultimate tool for keeping the bad guys at bay and armed citizens safe. There’s a lot more to self-defense than knowing how to aim your gun, though. Sometimes, being able to trump your opponent in hand-to-hand combat can make the difference between life and death.
That’s what happened in Santa Cruz, California earlier this week. According to reports, a man with a shotgun walked into a business on Saturday night and started to rob the place. An employee quickly turned the tables when he lunged for the shotgun. There was a brief struggle, but the employee eventually won out and wrenched the weapon out of the robbers hands. The employee suffered minor injuries during the scuffle.
At that point the robber decided it was a good idea to flee. He ran from the store without any money or merchandise. Talk about an inept robber – what kind of burglar takes nothing and leaves evidence behind?
Hopefully the soon-to-be-caught kind. The police arrived and attempted to locate the robber, but despite the police K-9 named Lobo and his best efforts, the thief got away. They are currently seeking any leads on the would-be robber, who stood between 5’2” to 5’4” and was in his 20s.
This story just goes to show you that self-defense scenarios don’t necessarily end when you fire. There’s a lot more to it than simply pointing your gun at an immobile target and squeezing the trigger. What if your opponent has a gun, too? Do you know how to safely shoot from cover? What if you somehow have to struggle with your attacker for your firearm?
Of course, the best solution would be to put a gun into the hands of every store owner across the country. We know that gun laws can get a little bit crazy over in California, but criminals (even the shotgun-wielding variety) would be sure to think twice about robbing a store if they knew that store employees were armed, trained, and more than willing to take action.
