Thousands of armed citizens have banded together to form a vigilante group in the town of Tierra Colorado, 40 miles outside of the popular tourist destination Acapulco. After being terrorized by local drug cartels and government corruption, the self described ‘community police’ arrested all local police officers and set up their own security check points along the roads in and out of the town. They have also conducted searches and seizures of drugs possessed by town residents.
The force’s spokesman, Bruno Placido Valerio, said: ‘We have besieged the municipality, because here criminals operate with impunity in broad daylight, in view of municipal authorities.’
Vigilante groups are becoming increasingly more common place in Mexico as drug cartels continue to wield more power than the government.
