BREAKING: U.S. Senate clears way for gun debate, trumps filibuster (VIDEO)

The U.S. Senate voted on Thursday to overcome a Republican-led filibuster against proposed gun control talks, clearing the way for debate on universal background checks and renewing the expired assault weapons ban.

The vote comes a day after a bipartisan agreement on background checks proposed by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W. Virginia) and Patrick Toomey (R-Pennsylvania) that would expand background checks to include private sales and increase penalties for criminal sales.

Fourteen Republican senators, most notably Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Rand Paul (R-Kentucky), threatened to filibuster gun legislation, but the act was trumped 68 to 31 in favor the debate.
