Abrams Tanks pushed by Congress - Army says "No!" (VIDEO)

Although Congress has appropriated nearly half a billion dollars to build improved versions of the M1 Abrams battle tank, the U.S. military has repeatedly rebuffed the idea.

“If we had our choice, we would use that money in a different way,” Gen. Ray Odierno, the Army’s chief of staff, said this past week.

But keeping the Abrams production lines rolling protects good paying jobs in congressional districts where the tank’s many suppliers are located. The dilemma illustrates the challenge Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel faces as he seeks to purge programs that the military considers unnecessary in order to ensure funds for essential operations and training.
