Seattle Turning Buyback Guns Into 'Peace Bricks'

PeaceBrickIn a move to mold weapons of war into “messages of peace,” the city of Seattle, WA has decided to convert the more than 700 firearms collected during a gun buyback program into bricks.

Although studies have shown such programs are ineffective at reducing crime, city officials announced the buyback in wake of last December’s massacre in Newtown, CT. Private sponsors contributed tens of thousands of dollars so that people could anonymously turn in weapons for shopping cards worth up to $200.

The Seattle Police Department ultimately collected 716 guns, and according to Mayor Mike McGinn, they’ll be melted into bricks carrying “messages of peace” and placed around the city in a bid to… well, we’re not sure.
