Meet the MILF Army: The unfortunately named Filipino Muslim rebel group (VIDEO)
Meet the Moro Islamic Liberation Front aka MILF, a splinter group of Muslim rebels operating in the Philippines.
Despite the humorous name, MILF is a deadly serious organization. Fortunately, your mother has little to fear – unless she lives in the southern Philippines. Because that’s where MILF has been patrolling the jungles ahead of the country’s contentious elections held this week.
Muslim rebels from the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), formed in the 1960s to achieve greater autonomy in the Philippines, later splintered off in the 1980s to form MILF. They’ve been linked to Al Qaeda and a bombing incident in Davao Airport in 2003. More recently, Islamic militants operating out of the southern Philippines killed 14 marines, although MILF denied responsibility.
The Philippine government took steps last year to broker peace with MILF and other insurgents in the region, signing a preliminary peace pact with a roadmap to a final settlement expected in 2016. As part of the deal, MILF is responsible for maintaining peace on Mindanao island to prevent civil unrest during the congressional and local elections. Despite scattered killings and fears of fraud, the polls have been relatively peaceful thus far.
