Grandpa Guns Down Burglar, Thwarts Robbery (VIDEO)

Police say an elderly man in South Memphis woke up to a burglar in his home and promptly shot the man twice.

The man, John Lewis, was sleeping in his bedroom when he heard a noise in his living room. The 77-year-old said he peaked out and found himself face-to-face with a burglar.

“He told me about three times ‘close your door or I will shoot you,’” Lewis explained.

Lewis complied, went back to his bedroom, reached under his pillow and grabbed his gun. “I came back out and I shot him,” said Lewis.

The grandfather fired three times, hitting would-be burglar Travis Weddle, twice. Two bullets grazed his chest and one wounded his hand – forcing Weddle to ditch a 55-inch TV he intended to steal.

“He came out the door and hollered back ‘I left my keys in there.’ His car was parked out here. A white Maxima,” said Lewis. But grandpa wasn’t about to give the burglar back his keys.

After being transported to the hospital, Weddle is now in jail, charged with burglary and attempted robbery. His bail has been set at $100,000.

According to Mr. Lewis, police commended his actions. “They say I did the right thing.”

Although Lewis’ gun is being held as evidence, he plans to buy another one as soon as possible.
