Venture Capitalist launches Website: '' (VIDEO)

A well-heeled venture capitalist and media mogul has launched a new website with one central objective: undermining the political and grassroots activism of the National Rifle Association.

Kenneth Lerer, director of Lerer Ventures and the co-founder of the Huffington Post, is the creator of, an online platform that features videos, news articles and images centered around the ongoing debate over gun control. Of course, the content has a certain political bent and hews to the larger anti-NRA agenda (see video below).

“The point of StopTheNRA is to post and create viral content and put it all in one place to bring ongoing attention to the outrageous positions of the NRA and to continue to bring pressure on the issues,” Lerer told the Washington Post.

In addition to being a source for slanted news and information, Lerer also hopes that it serves as a portal where pro-gun control advocates can gather to organize protests and rallies against the nation’s gun lobby.

The website reads:

A vast majority of Americans support expanded gun control measures, but the NRA has again and again stopped every effort in Congress to pass common-sense legislation. So now it’s time to stop the NRA.

The NRA and its lobbyists have overpowered the will of the majority of Americans for too long.

Join and the millions of Americans who support legislation to prevent gun violence. Sign up for the latest information on efforts to end gun violence and make your voice heard.

What’s fascinating is that the majority of Americans have a favorable view of the National Rifle Association, at least according to Gallup, which has surveyed the public about its “overall opinion of the NRA” since 1993.

In fact, in December 2012, in the direct aftermath of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, when emotions and anti-gun fervor were at a high, Gallup found that 54 percent of Americans had a favorable view of the NRA, while only 38 percent had an unfavorable view.

Bottom line: has its work cut out for it.

That said, Lerer is a big admirer of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and according to a recent Tech Crunch interview, Lerer plans on teaming up on occasion with Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which is currently launching the most aggressive pro-gun control campaign in the country, and Gabrielle Giffords’ Americans for Responsible Solutions.

It goes without saying, but if Lerer plans to take down the mighty NRA, he’ll need all the help and money he can get.

In any event, what are your thoughts?  What are Lerer’s chances of succeeding? (Gun control conversation starts at around 11:00 in video below).
