15-year-old Georgia student arrested for bringing loaded gun to school

A 15-year-old student at Alexander High School in Douglasville, Georgia, was arrested Wednesday afternoon after school officials discovered that he was carrying a loaded 9mm pistol in his backpack.

According to Douglas County Sheriff Phil Miller, “It was a situation where students became aware due to some of the things that he was heard saying. We don’t know what his intentions were. From our understanding, any danger may have been more to himself than to others. But in a situation like this, and in this case particularly, the procedures that the school system has in place and the procedures we train our people on, worked the way they were supposed to and no one was injured.”

Apparently another student at the school informed a school employee that the teen had a gun. That employee then relayed the information to School Resource Office Tony Carr, who found the boy, searched his backpack and discovered the loaded firearm.

The teen was taken into police custody but also transported to a local hospital for what was believed to be a psychological evaluation.

It appears that there was no immediate danger. No injuries were reported and the school was not evacuated or even put on lockdown. The teen was simply isolated and dealt with in an appropriate manner.

The school’s principal, Nathan Hand, commended both the student for alerting the school employee as well as the school staff and officers for the way they handled the situation.

The principal sent out automated phone call to parents about the situation as well as a letter detailing the situation.

“Of course safety and security of our children is always our first concern,” Hand said in a letter to the community. “We are fortunate to have students who notified authorities, and a dedicated administration and staff, including resource officers, who genuinely care about our young people, which allowed this very unfortunate situation to be handled with no harm to anyone. We are very grateful for that.”

It is unknown at this time if the boy, whose name is being withheld because of his age, will face any charges. It is also unknown where the teen acquired the gun.
