CMMG announcing Mk3 CBR .308 carbine

CMMG10208

CMMG is another new face in the fast-growing AR-10 market with the introduction of the Mk3 CBR carbine, or Carbine Battle Rifle. This tactical rifle is chambered for .308 Winchester for people looking for a big-bore alternative to the AR-15.

The carbine-length barrel makes it a particularly flexible rifle that can be put to just about any task, from extended-range shooting, iron man rifle matches, close-quarters self-defense and hunting in just about any field.

Chambered for .308, the rifle is also rated to fire 7.62 NATO ammunition. The rifle is built around a medium tapered 16-inch barrel that balances weight and rigidity. The barrel has a one-in-10 twist and a standard 5/8-24 threaded muzzle and is fit with a custom CMMG muzzle brake and a low-profile gas block.

CMMG_Mk3_CBRThe barrel is 416 stainless steel with a nitride finish for long-lasting corrosion resistance and improved accuracy and the receivers are 6061-T6 hard-anodized machined billet aluminum for a tight, precise fit.

CMMG is also introducing their new Revo KeyMod (RKM) free-floating handguard. The handguard uses the new open-source standard for mounting accessories and Picatinny rail sections. CMMG will follow up on the RKM with a series of in-house KeyMod accessories.

For those unfamiliar with KeyMod, CMMG explains the system in their press release. “The KeyMod system is the new industry standard for mounting accessories. It is a simple, comfortable and lightweight solution that offers users a low profile mounting alternative to the M1913 Picatinny rail. The KeyMod system presents a new level of customization, as it allows the direct attachment of compatible accessories without the use of intermediate M1913 Picatinny rails. For accessories that are not yet KeyMod compatible, users can purchase a separate CMMG 5-slot Picatinny adapter rail that can be easily attached to any of the KeyMod slots for optimal placement of the accessories.”

The Mk3 is fit with a full-length 15-inch RKM handguard that extends right up to the muzzle device that is accommodating to all types of shooting stances and can host a large number of accessories. The handguard has full-length KeyMod slots on the three-, six- and nine-o’clock positions. The top is a full-length Picatinny rail for optics and iron sights.

Rounding out the rest of the package is a full compliment of Magpul furniture and accessories. The Mk3 is fit with a MOE pistol grip, ACS-L buttstock and 20-round PMAG. Inside the carbine sports a Geissele Super Semi-Automatic two-stage trigger for predictability and precision shooting.

The Mk3 CBR is a fairly premium rifle with a lot of high-end components and is definitely not an entry-level AR-10-type rifle. Still, CMMG is offering it at an approachable price point with its $1,999 MSRP. As usual, real-world prices tend to be several hundred dollars lower.

Even if it sells close to its MSRP the Mk3 CBR offers a lot for the price. The rifle is very competitive with other AR-10-type rifles that don’t match it in terms of parts and features. No matter what your shooting needs are, if you’re in the market for a semi-automatic .308 the Mk3 CBR ought to be on your short list.

We don’t know when these rifles will hit the market but we expect to learn more at SHOT Show January 2014. For more details and specifications visit the product page.
