Judging from the slow-motion video of the bullet hitting the gel block it’s clear that the projectile starts to fragment immediately, dumping a whole lot of energy into the first few inches of media.

That’s not necessarily ideal for a self-defense load as you want that energy dump and projectile expansion to happen towards the center of its 12 to 18 inches of penetration.

However, the bullet fragments clearly make a large permanent cavity.
