Detroit does it again: Female homeowner opens fire on intruder (VIDEO)

An attempted home invasion early Tuesday morning in Detroit was thwarted by a 50-year-old homeowner who shot the suspect as he tried to enter her home through a back window.

It was about 12:30 a.m. when the homeowner noticed a truck pull up in front of her house, local media reported. A female was driving and a male got out of the vehicle and began to walk around her house, apparently searching for a way to get inside.

Knowing that the man was trying to get into her home, she immediately called 911 and remained on the phone while she waited for the police to arrive. She also armed herself with a handgun she had bought last year at the advice of her brother.

Once the male suspect found the only window on the house that didn’t have bars, he used a crowbar to try to pry the window open for about half an hour. All the while, the homeowner was watching his movements as she remained on the phone with the 911 dispatcher.

His attempt to pry the window open was unsuccessful, so he eventually just broke the glass with the crowbar instead.

Anita McGee, the homeowner’s sister, told reporters that her sister wasn’t out to harm anyone, but she was scared.

“She stated to [the 911 dispatcher], ‘He’s coming into my home. I really do not want to shoot him. He’s coming in; I can see him in my house.’ The dispatcher stated to her, ‘You have the right to protect yourself,’” says McGee.

The woman warned the man several times that she was armed, but he did not heed to her warnings. And as he started to crawl through the window, she opened fire.

When police arrived, they found the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old James Roundtree, in the front yard suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder. He was transported to a local hospital where he was last said to be in stable, but serious condition.

The female driver of the truck, who was later discovered to be only 16 years old, was taken into custody as well.

The homeowner was not injured during the incident and her family told reporters that they’re happy she is safe, but although she’s lived there for more than two decades, it may be time to find another home.

Nonetheless, Jimmie McGee says of his sister, “That’s my hero. That’s my hero. Definitely.”
