President Obama gives surprise visit to troops in Afghanistan (VIDEO)

The president met with about 3,000 troops during a surprise visit to Afghanistan over the weekend.

President Obama went to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan on Sunday to thank the American troops and civilians stationed there for their service.

Additionally, he explained how the war will soon end and the troops — or most of them — will return home.

“I’m also here because after more than a decade of war, we’re at a pivotal moment.  Last year marked a major milestone — for the first time, Afghan forces took the lead to secure their own country,” Obama said. “And today, you’re in a support role — helping to train and assist Afghan forces.  For many of you, this will be your last tour in Afghanistan.”

The president continued, “And by the end of this year, the transition will be complete and Afghans will take full responsibility for their security, and our combat mission will be over.  America’s war in Afghanistan will come to a responsible end.”

While most of the troops will return home, a select few will stay behind in advisory roles.

At the end of the speech, the president shook the hand of everyone in attendance.
