Vice reports on ‘Police Militarization meets Hacker Culture: Swatting’ (VIDEO)

Vice News talked with a SWAT team about “swatting,” a growing trend amongst hackers and gamers designed to lure a SWAT team into a false emergency.

SWAT teams take every call seriously, but some of them turn out to be pranks. Law enforcement works to identify the perpetrators of these crimes, but with the increasing accessibility to anonymity, it can be difficult to nail down a suspect.

Guns.com previously reported on a recent example of “swatting” that took place in Long Island last April. After being defeated in an online game of “Call of Duty,” the gamer used the victor’s identity, called police, and said, “I just killed my mother and I might shoot more people.”
