An armed security guard dozed off during his shift, leaving the Manhattan offices of the FBI and Homeland Security vulnerable.
The guard, who works for FJC Security Services, was stationed at the Jacob K. Javits Federal Office Building, CBS New York reports. A passerby spotted him nodding off so he quickly pulled out his phone to take video. The man said there were also two other guards sleeping in the complex, but he didn’t take video of those.
Many were outraged at the guard’s “lackadaisical” attitude towards his job, including the man who took the video.
“I was in disbelief,” the photographer said. “Because there’s so many people out there, so many competent people who are looking for employment who can’t find employment. But here it is you have these guys who do have the jobs who are not taking their jobs seriously.”
But others think there may be more at play than just a sleepy guard.
“People have lives and you never know why they fall asleep,” one nearby resident said. “They could have had a long day. So a lot needs to be looked into as why that man was so sleepy that he feels comfortable enough to fall asleep at such an important job.”
FJC Security Services released a statement shortly after the incident letting the public know the sleeping security guard was suspended.
“We take these allegations seriously and have launched an immediate investigation into the matter,” the company said. “The guard has been suspended pending this investigation and will not return to this site.”
