Wayne LaPierre accepts Mark Kelly's ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (VIDEO)

While fulfilling the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness of ALS yesterday, gun control advocate Mark Kelly nominated his brother and fellow astronaut Scott Kelly, retired Navy SEAL Jimmy Hatch, and the National Rifle Association’s head honcho, Wayne LaPierre.

During his nominations, which are required, he said, “Wayne LaPierre. The head of the National Rifle Association, who we do hope, one day, we could agree upon more than just supporting ALS and Lou Gehrig’s disease research.”

In response, NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam confirmed, “Wayne will be doing the ice bucket challenge for ALS.  He will also be sending a check.”

Kelly and his wife, former congresswoman Gabriel Giffords who survived an assassination attempt in 2011 after getting shot in the head, created Americans for Responsible Solutions following the Sandy Hook mass shooting in 2012, where 20 children and six educators were gunned down.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has become an Internet sensation since introduced earlier this month. Participants film themselves getting doused with buckets of ice water, and then nominate others to do the same, and those nominated can either accept the challenge or make a donation to an ALS charity, or do both.

The video campaign has helped raise awareness of ALS, or Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and helped charities raise nearly $41.8 million as of Aug. 21.
