NICS was temporarily out of service this morning

The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check system was down for about an hour this morning due to a system upgrade over the weekend.

“A major system upgrade was implemented yesterday (Sunday) to one of the FBI’s databases. It did cause some issues yesterday and the NICS was out of service for a few hours yesterday morning. Some issues persist with one of the databases that the NICS relies upon to conduct background checks,” said FBI spokeswoman Jill Montgomery via email. “Because of such, we have had the NICS out of service this morning as well.”

The NICS is expected to be out of service for approximately 30 minutes this morning.  We appreciate your patience on Sunday and apologize for any inconvenience,”

Early estimates put the delay at a half hour, but from the time of notification to solution was more like an hour.
