Pennsylvania congressman's press secretary pleads guilty to gun charges

Ryan Shucard, press secretary for Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Marino, pleaded guilty in a D.C. Superior Court Wednesday to misdemeanor gun charges stemming from a July incident in which he carried an unloaded 9mm Smith & Wesson and magazine with ammunition into a federal office building, a local NBC affiliate reported.
According to Shucard’s lawyer, the incident was a “total accident” and Shucard simply forgot the gun was in his bag when he entered the Cannon House Office Building. While going through a security checkpoint, the firearm set off a metal detector and led to Shucard’s arrest.
Shucard was charged with possession of an unregistered firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. He was handed a sentence of 30 days in jail and six months probation, but the sentence has been suspended.
Following the incident, Shucard was placed on unpaid leave and it’s not known at this time if he’ll be getting his job back.
