Cops use spike strips during high speed chase; Turns out to be laboring mom en route to hospital (VIDEO)

Sometimes one has a fairly good reason to break the law. When Rachel Kohnen, awakened her husband, Ben, in the early morning hours of Oct. 14 at their home in Fort Dodge, Iowa, she gave him such a reason. Rachel was nine months pregnant, three days overdue, and she told her husband that it was time to go to the hospital.

“She says, this is not like the others, this is happening right now,” said Ben, who freely admitted he was doing about 30 miles per hour over the speed limit when the officer attempted to pull him over.

“He starts following me and he turns on his lights and my wife says, ‘We can’t pull over. The baby is coming now,’” Ben said.

“I think I was screaming, ‘Oh dear God, we can’t have the baby in the car,’” Rachel added.

The couple had called 911 by the time they reached the edge of town, but the officer had also called for backup when the couple refused to pull over.

Up ahead spike strips were deployed, which blew out all four tires of the parents’ car. When the couple exited the vehicle – with guns trained on them – the officers realized why the couple hadn’t stopped.

The couple, who after the fact was surprisingly chipper about the entire ordeal, was given a police escort the rest of the way to the hospital, and their 10-pound baby girl, Hazel, was born an hour later.
