More than 6 in 10 Americans say guns make homes safer

The number of Americans who think having a gun in the homeĀ makes it safer has doubled since 2000, according to a new Gallup poll.

But three in 10 Americans say having a gun in the homeĀ makes it a more dangerous place.

For the survey, Gallup interviewed 1,017 registered voters from all 50 states and the District of Columbia over the phone.

The poll resulted in 63 percent of Americans sayingĀ a gunĀ makes a homeĀ safer, 30 percent sayingĀ more dangerous and 6 percent sayingĀ it depends.

Of those surveyed, 42 percent said they keepĀ a gun in the home, 53 percent said didnā€™t, and 4 percent had no opinion.

More specifically, 2 percent said they also kept a gun in the garage, barn, shed or vehicle, 52 percent said didnā€™t, and 4 percent had no opinion.

Americans who have a gun in their homeĀ are significantly more likely than others to say that having a gun makes a home safer, though one in 10 believe it makes a homeĀ more dangerous.

The majority of those who think guns in a home makes it safer are white, male and republican.
