Florida governor cuts prices for some hunting licenses in half

Fresh off a re-election victory against a Democratic contender, Gov. Rick Scott on Thursday ordered prices for Lifetime Sportsman’s Licenses for Florida children and young adults prices halved through Dec. 24.

The licenses, which cover saltwater and freshwater recreational fishing, hunting and most associated permits for outdoorsmen in the Sunshine State, will cost $500 rather than the normal $1,000 fee. State residents aged 21 years old and younger are eligible for the reduced license. Scott signed the executive order in Tallahassee.

“Our state’s natural treasures give families wonderful opportunities for both fishing and hunting from the Panhandle to the Keys,” said Scott in a statement obtained by Guns.com.

“This Lifetime Sportsman’s License will provide Florida’s youth with the opportunity to spend time outdoors with their families. Fishing and hunting are time-honored traditions in our state, and I encourage all Floridians to spend some time enjoying the great outdoors,” the governor said.

These licenses, which can be purchased online or through local tax collector’s offices, are valid for the lifetime of the sportsmen, even if they move from the state in future years.

Gun rights groups were quick to praise Scott’s move.

“This is a fantastic offer and a terrific way to help young people enjoy our natural resources and the out-of-doors,” explained Marion Hammer, president of the Unified Sportsmen of Florida and past president of the National Rifle Association to Guns.com. “It’s giving the gift of the outdoors for life. It doesn’t get much better than that for youngsters who enjoy hunting and fishing.”

The reduced price license fee goes into effect starting Nov. 24.
