3 students shot and gunman killed at Florida State University (VIDEO)

Police killed a gunman who opened fire inside the Florida State University’s Strozier Library in Tallahassee early Thursday morning.

“The Florida State University community is extremely saddened by the shootings that took place early this morning at Strozier Library, in the very heart of campus, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of all those who have been affected,” FSU says in a statement.

“The three students who have been injured are our highest priority followed by the needs of our greater university community. We will do everything possible to assist with their recovery,” it continues.

At a news conference Thursday morning, Tallahassee police Chief Michael DeLeo advised that at approximately 12:30 a.m. an armed subject opened fired at the Strozier Library. University Police report that the library was packed with 200 to 300 students who were studying.

“Security is not lacking on campus,” campus Chief David Perry told reporters. “This person for whatever reason produced a handgun and started shooting.”

Responding officers soon arrived on scene met the subject in front of library. After refusing commands issued by the officers, the subject opened fire on officers and was killed in the resulting gunfight.

There were no officers injured in the confrontation.

Police advise it was an isolated incident, and the currently unidentified assailant is believed to have acted alone.

Two of the shooter’s victims were taken to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare for treatment, while the third victim was treated and released at the scene.

FSU has canceled classes and exams for Thursday and is setting up counseling services for students and staff in need of them.

This is a developing story.
