Darren Wilson may resign depending on grand jury decision

As the grand jury nears its final decision, Darren Wilson, who shot and killed Michael Brown, is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to resign as an officer with the Ferguson Police Department.

The grand jury’s decision on whether or not to indict him in the shooting death of the unarmed teen plays a major role in his decision to resign and when he should announce it, sources told reporters.

Wilson’s resignation would not be an admission of fault, he told sources, but rather a move that would ease tensions for the Ferguson community and his fellow officers.

The grand jury hearing the evidence meets Friday in what might be its final session and it will likely announce whether or not they’ve decided to charge Wilson.

Sources said Wilson could announce his resignation the same day the grand jury reveals its decision, and that he doesn’t want to jump the gun, so to speak, for fear that it would appear he’s admitting fault.

However, the talks could still collapse. Wilson doesn’t know what the grand jury will do and if they return charges he could change his mind.

Union officials with the St. Louis Police Officers’ Association do not think Wilson will be indicted, CBS News reported.

The shooting death of Brown on Aug. 9 ignited protests, which sometimes turned violent, in Ferguson. The shooting along with the mayhem brought national scrutiny to police procedure, the use of military equipment by civilian authorities, and race relations.

Wilson maintains that he fired shots when Brown attacked him and reached for his sidearm.
