The location of the Tommy Gun held by Winston Churchill in a famous 1940 photograph was discovered after many believed it to be lost.

Opinions about the photo were split – the British viewed it as Churchill armed and ready to “fight on the beaches” as the troops supported him, but the Nazis used the photo as an opportunity to peg Churchill as a gangster.

After the end of World War II, the Thompson submachine gun featured in the photo was believed to have been lost, but the Combined Military Services Museum in Maldon, Essex, said they have the gun on display.

“I am about 80 percent certain it is the Churchill Tommy Gun,” said military historian Clive McPherson, who has studied the famous gun’s history. “No one else in the country has laid claim to having the gun.”
