Off-duty officer accidentally shoots self while holding donuts (VIDEO)

A 25-year police veteran is recovering from a gunshot wound after he accidentally shot himself in the stomach while in an elevator Saturday night.

Darryl Jouett, who lives in Erlanger, Kentucky, was off-duty and in Cincinnati when his .40-caliber service pistol inadvertently discharged.

“He was transitioning the holster and transitioning the gun out of his holster. He was going to carry it in his hand as they walked to the car,” said Cincinnati Capt. Michael John. “As he was pulling the gun from the holster, a round discharged, ricocheted in the elevator, struck him in the stomach.”

After the gun discharged, Jouett dropped the pistol and the box of donuts he was carrying before he fell to the ground, as his wife looked on in shock.

No one else was injured during the incident, and Jouett’s injuries are considered non-life threatening.
