Injured Army vet receives mortgage-free home (VIDEO)

A retired Army veteran who suffered brain, back and knee injuries while serving in Iraq said he nearly lost everything due to his injuries coupled with PTSD, but thanks to Bank of America and the Military Warriors Support Foundation, Allen Megginson and his wife, Amy, now have a new home, with no mortgage, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Amy said it’s been a hard road to walk, and Allen echoed a similar sentiment, saying the last few years have seemed like an uphill battle. But the couple says things are looking up now.

Allen said he hopes the home will give them the chance to help other vets in need. He plans to host cookouts for veterans and their families, as well as build a shop in the back where he can pursue woodworking, a much-loved hobby of his which he thinks could be therapeutic for other vets dealing with PTSD.

In addition, Allen hopes the new home will by a sort of family hub for the couple’s five children and all of their grandchildren.

“It feels like home. It really does,” the couple said.
