President Obama says he hasn't given up on gun control (VIDEO)

In an interview with ABC News, President Obama insisted that he hasn’t given up on gun control, but he said he’s had difficulties getting changes passed through Congress in the years since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting at the end of 2012.

The shooting in which 20 first-graders and six educators were gunned down in cold blood sparked a call for stricter gun control laws by the public, despite a general understanding that new laws would not have prevented the tragedy. However, many saw it as a way to discuss a larger issue of gun violence, which takes the lives of roughly 30,000 people in the U.S. annually.

The president’s push culminated with a proposal for universal background checks. A bill was introduced in the U.S. Senate, but lawmakers failed to push it passed an initial vote and the measure died in April 2013. The effort seemingly went to bed at the federal level.
