Elderly man fatally shoots home invasion suspect (VIDEO)

An 80-year-old man shot and killed a man who broke into his Texarkana home Thursday night, protecting himself and his wife.

Police were called by the homeowner around 8 p.m., and when they arrived at the home they found the suspect lying under the carport. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the initial investigation, the suspect, who was later identified as Garret Heath Halbert, forced entry into the couple’s home, where a struggled ensued between Halbert and the elderly man. The homeowner was armed with a handgun, but during the altercation, Halbert struggled to gain control of the firearm.

The homeowner shot Halbert a single time in the chest. The police radio recording indicated that the homeowner also accidentally shot himself in the arm during the struggle. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.

Authorities said the couple was not acquainted with Halbert.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time.
