Family receives WWI Purple Heart they never knew existed (VIDEO)

A Purple Heart awarded to a World War I veteran was returned to the family of the original recipient, but ironically, the family never even knew the medal existed.

“Everybody knew he was injured, but no one knew how or what happened,” said Rick Lanthorn, the great nephew of Sgt. Frank Holsten. “People just didn’t talk about it back then.”

A woman from Mansfield, Ohio, some 60 miles away, said after her father died, she found the Purple Heart in his safe deposit box, then spent weeks trying to find Holsten’s family. She has no idea where it came from or how it got there.

Following a September ceremony at the military night football game, the 100-year-old medal will be put on display at a local high school, where Lanthorn’s son is a teacher.
