Dash cam footage released of officers saving suicidal man from burning car (VIDEO)

Authorities released video, which will be used when training police cadets in the future, showing the intense moments when officers approached a suicidal man who set his car on fire in Austin early Tuesday morning.

A small explosion can be seen and heard as the fire ignited with such force that it threw the man from the car and pushed one of the officers back. The man attempted to get back into the car again while it was still on fire, but the extreme heat kept him from doing so.

“We’re talking thousands of degrees inside there,” said Austin Fire Department Capt. Andy Reardon. “… For him to get back in the car like that, to do that, he was very dedicated on killing himself.”

The officers eventually subdued the man, who was taken to the hospital and transferred to a burn unit. The two officers suffered minor injuries and were treated and released.

“I’m very proud of the officers’ courageous life-saving efforts and relieved their injuries were minor,” said Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo. “My thoughts and prayers go out to the person they saved.”

WARNING: Some may find the video disturbing.
