Family of 'black lives matter' activist orders independent autopsy after alleged jail suicide (VIDEO)

ABC US News | World News

The family of Sandra Bland, who died in police custody Monday in Texas, has ordered an independent autopsy to be conducted today, a family attorney told reporters.

Bland, who lived in the Chicago suburb of Naperville, graduated from Prairie View A&M University and was planning to move back to Texas. She was arrested on July 10 in Prairie View following a routine traffic stop, with authorities alleging that she was “argumentative and uncooperative.”

In cell phone video of the arrest that was posted to YouTube, Bland can be heard questioning officers’ tactics, accusing them of slamming her to the ground.

Bland regularly commented on matters involving the “BlackLivesMatter” grassroots campaign, which aims to call attention to deaths of young black men as the result of an inept justice system. Under the title “Sandy Speaks,” Bland posted her comments to YouTube.

Her family told reporters that they find it difficult to believe that she would have committed suicide since there were never any signs indicating such an outcome and the fact that she was just days away from starting a new job.

The Waller County Sheriff’s Office, which jailed her after her arrest, said in a statement Friday specific details of Bland’s booking information cannot be released due to the pending investigation, but don’t believe current policies in place are to blame.
